Vineyard Experts to Present How to Grow
Grapes Workshop And “Best of the
Best” Missouri Wine Tasting to Benefit Platte
County Fair
This year’s fairgoers will
have the opportunity to taste the “best of the best” of Missouri
wines at a benefit wine tasting to be held from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m.
opening night of the fair, July 22, in the Platte Purchase Building on
the fairgrounds. For $15 participants will receive a
souvenir wine glass and taste some of the best wines from top wineries
throughout the state, as well as visit with their representatives. All
proceeds from the event will benefit the Platte County Fair.
“This is a rare opportunity to taste many award-winning Missouri wines,” Fred Whisman, wine event coordinator, said. “It is the ‘best of the best – from Missouri grown varietals- reds to whites and sweets to dry.’” Wineries set to present wines at the event include: Pirtle Winery, Jowler Creek Winery, and Riverwood Winery – all of Platte City, Mo. Others participating from across the state are: Augusta Winery , Montelle Winery, St. James Winery, Adam Puchta Winery, Les Bourgeois Winery, Baltimore Bend Winery, Stonehaus Winery, Inland Sea Winery, Stone Hill Winery, and other fine Missouri wineries. On July 25 from 10:00 a.m. to noon, top commercial wine makers and vineyard managers from the region will conduct a workshop on how to grow grapes and what grapes offer the greatest profit potential. Admission to the workshop is $10. Topics to be covered in the workshop include: How to grow premium grapes, what grapes wineries are buying, vineyard practices that produce premium grapes, and where to find the materials, chemicals and equipment needed for successful grape growing. “You don’t have to be a current vineyard manager, or even be growing grapes, to benefit from this workshop,” Whisman said. “Many agriculturists have discovered the benefit of growing grapes to sell to wineries and others for wine production.” The workshop will also be held in the Platte Purchase Building on the fairgrounds. Wines from Missouri will be showcased and sold by the glass from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. throughout the fair weekend. For more

Who will Wear the Crown?
2009 Platte County Fair Queen
Candidates Sought
Scholarship opportunity from Missouri
Western State University Foundation and Zona Rosa Scholarship Money
Awaits Her
When the 2009 Platte County Fair Queen is crowned she will receive a lot more than accolades. In addition to her crown she will be awarded a $1,000 scholarship opportunity from the Missouri Western State University Foundation and $500 in scholarship money from Zona Rosa. All this, and she will have the honor of representing the fair at the event, to the media and as a candidate at the Missouri State Fair in August. The recipient awarded the Missouri Western State University scholarship is expected to meet the current requirements for admission to the university.
“The fact that the Platte County Fair Queen will have 70 percent of her score based on her interview and her talent or speech indicates the recipient of the scholarship will be a student of merit who will bring credit to the scholarship and to Missouri Western State University,” Dan J. Nicoson, vice president for university advancement and executive director of the MWSU foundation said.
Zona Rosa General Manager Rosemary Salerno concurs. “We are pleased to be a part of helping the fair queen pursue her educational goals.” The fair queen competition is open to any young ladies between the age of 17 and not older than 22 (as of September 1, 2009) who have resided in Missouri and Platte County at least six months prior to July 4, 2009, are citizens of the United States, and who have not already competed at the State Fair more than twice. The contest will include a private pre-event interview on July 22 followed by an appearance in formal wear, and a talent or speech presentation during the evening event. Contestants will be judged on poise, appearance and personality within each competition category. The competition, which will be open to fairgoers, will be conducted in the Platte Pavilion on the fairgrounds the opening night of the fair. The fairgrounds are located at exit 20 off I-29, just north of KCI Airport. Each contestant must have a sponsor, which can be an organization, business or individual. A sponsorship fee of $50 payable to the Platte County Fair Association must accompany an application. The deadline for entries to be received for the contest for the Platte County fair queen is July 10. For an application or information on being a sponsor contact committee co-chairs Judy Davis at (816) 640-5449 or Anne Jones at (816-741-2235.
